Self-Description
How would you describe yourself? This is a prominent interview question that some may feel uncomfortable answering, yet it has a significant purpose. Communicating why your specific experiences and attributes make you the best person for a role allows others to feel confident in you serving in the role you are seeking. This confidence is greatly enhanced when supported with action.
Let’s take a moment to tie this into God’s relentless covenant with mankind. In reflecting on His covenant, we see over and over again that man has failed to keep our end of the covenant with God. Yet God’s relentlessness continues to seek this relationship with His image bearers. Why? We learn why in His self-description when speaking with Moses in Exodus 34:6. He describes Himself as compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, overflowing with loyal love and faithfulness. His actions support His description over and over again! The basis of God’s covenant is His immeasurable love because He is love; that is His whole being and character. This loyalty love is khesed, a Hebrew word that combines the ideas of love, generosity and enduring commitment. It describes a relational and active love motivated by a deep personal care that God has for His people and the reason for His relentless pursuit of covenant. Faith in God’s convent requires belief, trust, action, and allegiance. God continually demonstrates this to us.
These are powerful qualities to emulate in our character. Demonstrating khesed in a relationship means that one does whatever it takes to preserve and protect and empower it to flourish. Having khesed with others takes belief (a confidence), trust (reliability that they follow through on their commitment), action (a doer not just a talker), and allegiance (a loyalty, a commitment kept no matter what). Emulating khesed is a powerful way to be a godly character witnesses for our Lord. Let us all encourage one another to be khesed people.
